What’s more important to you right now—learning or unlearning?
Offloading outdated beliefs is more transformative than acquiring new knowledge.
CEOs / Leaders: What’s more important to you right now - learning or unlearning?
When we’re new in business, the learning curve is steep. And while the learning never stops, at some point, I believe we have to ask ourselves: What do I need to unlearn?
Few authors, academics, or influencers talk about the power of unlearning. Yet, sometimes,
offloading outdated beliefs is more transformative than acquiring new knowledge, isn't it true?
Here’s something to reflect on this week (or longer 😉):
Is there a belief or piece of advice about business that you’ve outgrown? That no longer serves you? What changed your thinking?
For me, I used to believe that if I took care of everyone else - family, friends, clients - my own needs would naturally be met in return.
Turns out, I was wrong. That belief nearly destroyed me (both figuratively and literally). This belief often led to resentment and bitterness - both were a self-inflicted wound.
I had to unlearn the idea that prioritizing others would somehow guarantee my own fulfillment. Read that again. I'm not saying there isn't value in serving others - I'm saying that my *belief* "would guarantee my own fulfillment."
The hard truth for me? No one else is responsible for meeting my needs, my fulfillment, but me. I can’t delegate that.
While unlearning isn't easy, it is most definitely necessary.
What about you? Is there a belief or piece of advice about business that you’ve outgrown? That no longer serves you? What changed your thinking? (note: share from your scars, not your open wounds)
